After Grenfell Tower they’ve told us to remove our front door mats
Friday, 23rd June 2017
• AS a resident of Millbank, a flagship estate, I write concerning proposed major works and a recent health and safety notice from our TMO, Millbank Estate Management Organisation (MEMO).
Our block, Turner House, has many elderly residents. As a 71-year-old I rate as a youngster. There have been a number of funerals this year.
The estate is in excellent condition and the proposed works should be weighed against the wellbeing of the elderly for whom any such works are always a traumatic experience.
In response to the Grenfell Tower disaster our TMO has issued a directive to remove all front-door mats by June 19 otherwise these will be removed by the TMO. Insofar as it is well-meaning in intention – health and safety – it is irrelevant, as most UK households have a front door mat.
What would be sensible and necessary is for Westminster Council to consider the following with immediate effect:
• An assurance that none of the residential blocks contain cladding and, if they do, an assurance that it is fire-proof.
• Fire alarms – as I live on the ground floor with a separate entrance, I have no access to the staircases where a fire alarm button could be, so in case of a fire I could not raise the alarm. In fact I believe my block, and possibly others, have no fire alarms at all – and in my 23 years of residence I have never experienced a fire drill.
• Instead of carrying out expensive and cosmetic works the council should carry out necessary health and safety works such as installation of fire alarms and directions what to do in case of fire.
