Neighbour tried to kick down door to rescue woman in Harmood Street

The woman was rescued from her flat by firefighters 

Helicopter medics were dispatched to Kentish Town this afternoon after reports that an woman had been injured in a flat fire.

London’s Air Ambulance landed in Talacre Gardens, while firefighters and paramedics were sent by road to the scene of the blaze in Harmood Street.

A 57-year-old woman, who is believed to have lived alone at the flat in Harmood House, has been taken to hospital.

Darly Hanrahan, who lives in the block, tried to help the woman, while his neighbour rang the emergency services.

“I opened the letter box and there was a lot more smoke coming out. I wanted to boot off the door. I gave it a few kicks, but obviously it’s a really strong door.

“I wanted to break in, because I knew if she was in there she could be seriously injured.

“The fire engines were here in like five or ten minutes. They came and knocked down the door. They said that she was inside. When they bought her out she was badly burnt. I saw her come out, she was talking, but she looked in a bad way.”

The London Fire Brigade said: “Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to a fire at a block of flats in Harmood Street in Chalk Farm.

“Part of a ground floor flat was damaged by fire. One woman was treated at the scene by firefighters and London Ambulance Service crews before being taken to hospital.

“The Brigade was called at 1437 and the fire was under control at 1506. Fire crews from Kentish Town, Paddington and Holloway fire stations attended the scene

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
