ARSENAL midfielder Mariona Caldentey was voted the Professional Footballers’ Association Women’s Player of the Year this week following an outstanding debut season in north London.
The super Spaniard scored 19 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions last term, including eight on the Gunners’ way to lifting the Champions League – with victory in the final coming against her former club Barcelona.
Caldentey was also named in the WSL Team of the Year, alongside Arsenal teammates Emily Fox, Kim Little and Alessia Russo.
The awards ceremony, which was held at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday, also heralded success for the Arsenal men’s team, with William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice all named in the Premier League Team of the Year.
It wasn’t all good news for Arsenal this week, though. The club have confirmed Leah Williamson will miss the start of the season with a knee injury.
