Betting on Arsenal yellow card probed

FA were reportedly alerted after 'an unusual amount of money' was placed on a Gunners player being booked

THE Football Association is looking into claims of “unusual betting activity” involving an Arsenal player receiving a yellow card.

According to reports, bookmakers alerted the FA after “an unusual amount of money” was placed on a Gunners player being booked in a Premier League game this season, in a potential case of spot-betting.

Spot-betting allows people to place bets on specific details of matches – such as bookings or the number of corners – rather than the overall outcome of a game.

Professional footballers are strictly forbidden from gambling on events that they are able to influence.

The Athletic claims to know the identity of the player in question but has agreed not to reveal it at this time for privacy reasons.

And while the sports governing body is looking into the claims, a formal investigation has not been undertaken at this stage.

An FA spokesperson said: “The FA is aware of the matter in question and is looking into it.”

As the New Journal went to press last night (Wednesday), Arsenal had not commented.
