PETE Haynes is a writer whose work deserves to be celebrated. His novels cover topics that are not always the regular beats of the literati, and he draws on a life experience that makes his prose crisp, to the point, always intriguing and above all truthful.
Among his tomes is Malayan Swing, a ground-breaking portrayal of life for one man living in the system of “community care” – and what that really means.
His most recent novel, The Offender’s Nemesis, has a horrible dystopian realism about it: set in the future, it is a vicious attack on a culture that holds celebrity in higher esteem than simple humanity.
His works are powerful and approachable and so it is with some excitement that Diary notes next Thursday a short film based on his work, Bye Bye Baby, is being shown at the Soho screening room 01 Zero One. It’s bound to be moving and thought-provoking from one of London’s best underground writers.
