ARSENAL midfielder Mariona Caldentey scooped the inaugural Women’s Professional Game’s Women’s Super League (WSL) Player of the Year award on Sunday.

The Spain international scored nine goals and registered five assists in the WSL this season.

She was instrumental in helping the Gunners reach the Women’s Champions League final, where they will take on Caldentey’s former club Barcelona in Lisbon next Saturday, May 24.

“I’m super happy because I really enjoyed my first season here. Everyone helped me,” said Caldentey. “It was kind of easy to move from Barcelona. It’s a highly-competitive league, but I have enjoyed it.”

Caldentey was among the goals on Saturday, alongside Chloe Kelly, Frida Maanum and Kim Little, as the Gunners wrapped up their WSL season with 4-3 win over Manchester United.

Despite missing out on the goals for once, there was also good cause for Arsenal striker Alessia Russo to celebrate after she was confirmed as the WSL’s top scorer this season with 12 goals, sharing the Golden Boot accolade with Khadija Shaw from Man City.
