Just off Seven Dials: the former warehouse

It has been 44 years since Covent Garden’s fruit, vegetable and flower sellers upped sticks and headed to Nine Elms, and now the market is back.

West End shoppers are getting a host of new stalls in a bold bid by trendy food van operators Kerb to challenge Borough Market as the capital’s number one grub-gobbling destination.

Using an 18th-century former cucumber, banana and book warehouse, just off Seven Dials, Kerb struck a deal with landowners Shaftesbury to take on the building.

It will sell posh take-away meals and fresh produce, with independent businesses renting space.

The warehouse, called Thomas Neal’s after the land owner who laid out Covent Garden, is attached to the Donmar Theatre. Set over two floors, Diary looks forward to it opening next summer.
