Thomas Cubitt (1788-1855)

IN a move to highlight and celebrate the borough’s history, the Westminster Archives Centre and the council have decided to release some rarely-seen images from the city’s past.

The first image they have released shows some of Thomas Cubitt’s striking architecture in Belgrave Square, as pictured in the early 20th century.

The square become home to some of Victorian London’s highest profile figures, including Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Ogle, the Duke of Bedford and Queen Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent. The architect’s other work includes the eastern front of Buckingham Palace.
