MIDDLESEX Disability D40 First XI got their D40 Quest campaign underway in style on Sunday as they beat Essex by seven wickets at Harlow Town Cricket Club, writes Brian Jeeves.

Having been invited to bat, Joe Freestone top-scored for the home side with 26, while Andy Catherell scored 16. However, those around them fell cheaply, largely due to impressive bowling from George Greenway and Mohammed Farooq.

Highly-rated England man Greenway is viewed by many as world-class with the ball in hand. And he lived up to that billing as he took four wickets at the expense of just five runs in a five-over spell. Farooq, another England player, was also among the wickets – claiming 3-21 from eight as Essex were dismissed for 63.

Although there was little doubt about the outcome, Essex made a fist of it against a very talented Middlesex side. Skipper Ronnie Jackson removed Umesh Valjee, trapped lbw for 10, while Greenway found himself back in the pavilion after being caught by Jackson off a ball from Issac Elles for 18.

An unbeaten partnership between Aryan Janjale, who scored 14 not out, and Sam Kumar, 8 not out, sealed victory for Middlesex, who reached their winning target of 64-3 inside 22 overs.
