Everyone should benefit from the Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood

Friday, 23rd June 2017

• IT is good to read that the joint City of Westminster and Mayor of London Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) is taking the campaign for better air quality in central London to local primary schools like St Mary’s Bryanston Square Primary (Streets ahead: Pupils come clean over air quality, June 16)

But why are schools like Christ Church Bentinck Primary School, Cosway Street, being left out of the Marylebone LEN initiative? After all its school yard is probably more affected by air pollution than St Mary’s.

It’s not only near to the Marylebone Road but the flyover and the Old Marylebone Road, as it’s just 20 metres off the junction where all this three meet. This is where we have the most vehicles stopping and starting their engines when entering central London on the Marylebone Road.

Furthermore, it can not be claimed it’s not in Marylebone as it falls within the boundaries of the old borough of St Marylebone – highlighting well how Church Street ward has been excluded from the initiative while its schools and residents are equally, if not more affected by NOx pollution than the rest of Marylebone.

I trust the city council and the mayor can make amends by including this part of Marylebone into the Marylebone LEN asap.
