GET ready to tackle the nerves and chomp your nails once more because the last-gasp Lionesses are taking on Spain in this Sunday’s Euro final.

An Arsenal one-two from Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly saw England produce yet more drama on Tuesday night when they battled back to beat Italy 2-1 in extra-time.

As the injury time ticked down, supporters would have been forgiven for thinking it was all over: Sarina Wiegman’s side was coming home.

It looked for all the world, or Europe at least, like Barbara Bonansea’s 33rd-minute strike was going to be enough to earn Italy a stunning semi-final victory.

But Gunners teenager Agyemang, a surprise inclusion in Wiegman’s squad just seven weeks ago, drove home a crowd-erupting equaliser in the sixth of seven minutes of added time to extend the drama.

The forward almost struck again in extra-time with an audacious chip that came back off the crossbar – a moment of magic that Wiegman insisted had nothing to do with luck.

“I said with the squad announcement that she brings something special, she has something special,” said the England boss. “She’s only 19 years old, she’s very mature, she knows exactly what she has to do.

“When you talk about little things that she picks up straight away, because she’s not only in the 18-yard box very dangerous but when we have to go to her as a target player, she keeps the ball really well too.

“Even when you saw her shot hit the crossbar, that was not just a shot, she was aiming for it. If she continues like this, she has a very bright future.”

Just when the 26,500-plus crowd at Stade de Geneve started to brace themselves for a shootout, England were awarded a penalty after Beth Mead was bundled over in the box.

The ball ended up at the feet of Mead’s Arsenal teammate Kelly, who reacted well to seeing her initial penalty saved to slot home the rebound.

Praising the Gunners forward, Wiegman said: “I think Chloe thrives on these moments. She’s excited about them, she loves those moments. You can tell.”

Having started the tournament in defeat against France, come from 2-0 down to beat Sweden on penalties in the quarter-finals, and now eked past Italy in the semis, emotionally exhausted fans might have been pleased to hear Kelly say that hopefully the Lionesses can “make it a bit easier for ourselves in the final”.
Whether the supporters actually believe that or not is another thing.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Kelly told the TV cameras ahead of the final, which will be held at St Jakob-Park in Basel. “This team deserves nothing but that. Three finals on the bounce, but we want more.”

• Sunday’s final kicks off at 5pm and will be on both BBC1 and ITV.
