I THINK dear old David St George – the legendary Old Bailey correspondent – would have enjoyed the joke shared by friends as the horses pulled up to take him on his final assignment, that if he could see them leading the way he’d have a couple of quid on which one would reach the crematorium first.

Dave died last month aged 82 and in between reporting on some of criminal history’s most notorious cases during 40 years at the court – including for the Extra – he was a down-to-earth man who loved a beer and a bet.

A floral pint sat above his funeral hearse on its route through north London on Tuesday.

Everybody from the security staff to actual judges at the Bailey sent messages of condolences to the man who simply was always there.

Although now he’s not, and we’ll miss him greatly.
