AS newspapers and magazines look at their circulations and slumping advertising sales, they might be rather jealous of Private Eye, which generally sees its graphs going in the right direction.

What’s more, it hasn’t had to debase itself online with clickbait content to get by. It just keeps doing what it does best and understands that subscribers will keep subscribing. There are other revenue streams too.

The magazine’s end-of-year show at the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly on Sunday sold out so quickly, many fans were disappointed not to get a seat. Perhaps they could have sold it three times over.

No wonder editor Ian Hislop, Harry Enfield, Jan Ravens and co looked so happy on stage. Good health to a fine publication!
