Harrington: Soho pub’s ale and hearty

Lyric pub

TOO often newspapers like this tell you sad stories about pubs closing down, so I was encouraged to see that one of my favourite watering holes in Soho is expanding rather than calling last orders.

The Lyric in Great Windmill Street, pictured, rightly calls itself a “hidden gem” – a place where us natives can take a non-Londoner and pretend it’s a special secret, even though many, many of you will have supped pint in there. The hidden gem that everybody knows.

Westminster City Council has been asked to approve an extension into the unit next door. With a spectacular ale list and decent lunch – and a cosy escape when the city centre is all getting a bit much – it’s great to see it apparently thriving.
