Gabriel Jesus scored a beauty in Seville
GABRIEL Jesus has eased fears that he is facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines, and could even still be available to face Sheffield United this weekend.
The Brazilian forward looked back to his very best on Tuesday when he inspired the Gunners to a 2-1 Champions League victory at Sevilla. Jesus showed wizardry and vision to set up Gabriel Martinelli for the opening goal in southern Spain.
The striker then scored what proved to be the winner when he curled a superb shot into the top corner from an acute angle. But Jesus’s man-of-the-match display was marred late on when he limped off with a suspected hamstring injury.
Arteta shared mixed emotions after the game, admitting that he was “worried” about Jesus.
The Arsenal boss said: “Big games for big players, and he needed to produce those moments to win in stadiums like this. He’s done it, and obviously, he opened the game for us in a great way. And now, we’re really sad because he felt something in his hamstring and he had to come off, and I’m worried about that.”
Jesus, however, offered fans a more optimistic assessment – one that has given Gooners hope that he might even be available when Sheffield United visit the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
“I felt something, let’s see,” said Jesus. “I did some tests with the physio, it looks not that big, but let’s see. I have [to have] a scan, I’m pretty sure it will be nothing.”
It wasn’t such good news for Thomas Partey, however, with Arteta revealing the midfielder is back on the treatment table. The Ghana international has struggled for game time this season and has already missed a month of Premier League action with a groin injury.
Partey was pictured in training at the start of the week, but then suddenly didn’t travel to Spain.
Offering a worrying update, Arteta told TNT Sports: “Thomas picked up an injury yesterday [Monday] in training, unfortunately. It’s a muscle injury, we don’t know the extent of it. He’s a big miss for us.”
Meanwhile some Arsenal fans would have been shocked to see under-fire David Raya starting in goal against Sevilla after a series of nervy performances. But the chances of Aaron Ramsdale being recalled to face his old club this weekend appear slim at best with Arteta dismissing any suggestions that Raya is suffering in the spotlight.
“I haven’t seen that at all,” said the Spaniard. “There is a pressure of playing for big clubs where you have to win and you have to be at your best, and you have someone next to you that is pushing you every single day.
“But we can go player by player or position by position – you will tell me what’s happening with the left-back, the holding midfielder. That’s the beauty of the game and the fact that you have a lot of options is going to make those talks more frequent.”
