We need to keep floating bus stops

Friday, 2nd August 2024

• I WAS saddened to see that campaigners opposing the installation of safe and inclusive cycleways have submitted yet another petition.

It is not possible to build proper cycleways on the main roads which need them without floating bus stops. Without them people on bikes will simply be periodically chucked back in with general motor traffic.

This is not good enough if we want to make cycling an attractive and comfortable transport option for a wide demographic. I could not happily cycle with my young child, for example, if floating bus stops did not exist.

There are arguments that floating bus stops should be improved, of course. Priority could be made clearer, and I have read with interest about tests of systems which warn visually impaired people of approaching bicycles.

But banning the design – which would in effect rule out installing proper protected cycleways on any main roads – is not the answer.
