No word of plans to alter how we vote

Friday, 2nd June 2017

• ON May 23, The Guardian editorial referred to Conservative plans to abandon the current system of electing city mayors – including the London Mayor, and police commissioners: by a preferential vote and also the PR system for electing the Greater London Assembly.

One can only conclude (as The Guardian does) that the Tories want to change to the first-past-the-post system for mayors and commissioners, assuming that this winner-takes-all approach would benefit their party, at the expense of other political expression.

There seems to have been minimal coverage in the press of this proposal, so critical for our local democracy.
