Professor on a (secret?) mission in Camden
Thursday, 28th January
Professor Mariana Mazzucato
DESCRIBED as one of the world’s most influential economists, Professor Mariana Mazzucato has been doing the radio and TV channels this week promoting her latest book, Mission Economy.
She believes governments need to have a “mission” and quotes John F Kennedy’s “Moonshot programme” that set in motion the development of NASA and various government agencies.
As readers may know, Mariana Mazzucato helps to lead a Commission in Camden – an initiative set up, I believe, by Labour leader Georgia Gould, which would examine, among other things, growing inequality in the borough.
Set up more than six months ago, so far it does not seem to have published any findings – if so, they have not been publicised by the Town Hall. Why the secrecy? What are the professor’s views on the council’s investment programme?
Work is now going ahead on the construction of a 24-storey tower block of private flats next to the Francis Crick Institute in Somers Town.
Flats off-plan are now being marketed starting at over £1million.
Investment is by a Chinese firm, apparently, which is registered offshore and not subject to tax.
Strangely enough, Professor Mazzucato has argued extensively that governments shouldn’t have dealings with offshore companies. What are her views on the Somers Town tower?
