David Slack-Two

David Slack

• A “HERO” who fought to improve the plight of pensioners in the borough has died aged 78.

David Slack, a formidable and popular street trader in Camden Town, battled courageously himself for years before finally submitting to cancer, passing away at his home in Castle Road, Kentish Town.

He will be remembered with fondness at Islington Crematorium on September 20.

Mr Slack, whose summer trips to Royal Ascot races were one of the highlights of his year, ran a fruit and veg pitch in Camden High Street for many years opposite the now lost cinema.

He became a saviour to a lot of elderly folk by letting them have produce from his stall free of charge. His story of generosity featured in the New Journal and other newspapers when Camden Council took him to court for illegal street trading.

Many rallied to his support and he was treated with sympathy by a stipendiary magistrate at Clerkenwell Court in King’s Cross.

Mr Slack continued in his role as a street trader and switched to providing meat from Smithfield Market where he was a regular.
