Schiller knew about play…

• I WRITE further to the article (Play’s the thing, August 10) about “pure fun the order of the day at Antidote” in Belsize Park.

I hope it is not considered pretentious to draw attention to the German poet, playwright, historian and philosopher Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) in this context.

In his Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, he wrote: “Man (the German word ‘Mensch’ includes women too) plays only when he is a man in the full sense of the word, and he is only a complete man when he plays.” (Penguin Classic edition, pages 56-7).
