Floating bus stop, cyclists don’t give way to boarders
• I SYMPATHISE with Adam Gabsi, (Floating bus stops make us not want to go out – I can’t even get to Arsenal, December 28).
Floating bus stops are a nightmare for elderly or disabled people. I don’t think anyone who has to use them actually likes them or thinks they are a good idea.
The changes being made to the junction of Tollington Road with Holloway Road to create a cycle lane will be even more disastrous for people trying to board buses or cross the road there. It is a very busy bus stop with three or four different buses stopping there.
As far as one can see (the works are not completed yet) there is only a very narrow island between the cycle lane and the bus lane and the pavement alongside Waitrose is narrower than previously.
In my experience most cyclists don’t give way to people trying to board buses. You can’t really blame them because having to keep stopping and starting is tiresome and like everyone else they are in a hurry to get where they are going.
The complicated layout and multiple traffic lights will make it even more difficult for pedestrians to cross from Waitrose to the main shopping area along Holloway Road.
Helen Cansick claims that “keeping everyone travelling in the capital safe is our top priority” but it seem that cyclists’ safety is more important than anyone else’s.
I wonder how many older or disabled people she has actually consulted while composing her report.
It’s all the more galling because it doesn’t affect motorists at all. It is done at the expense of pedestrians and people using public transport.
