The US is our ally and Donald Trump is welcome here
Friday, 10th February 2017
• AS an Englishman, with centuries of family history and its sacrifice in conflict, I do not feel represented by those who choose to march and demonstrate against Brexit or the official invitation to the elected head of our greatest ally in freedom.
I cannot agree with anyone who places personal benefit, whether it be easy travel or economic ambitions, ahead of the wider right of this ancient beacon of freedom to regain the ability to govern its own affairs after decades of stealthy deceit, dissembling and want of truth that led us from Common Market to a politically pre-planned European Union.
It is no surprise to me that the majority of pro- Brexit votes came from England – an England beyond the cities.
As for demands that the invitation to President Donald Trump be withdrawn, this is not only rank discourtesy to our greatest ally but entirely counter-productive on the wider global stage.
How it must suit our foes to see the freedom to demonstrate – one of those freedoms for which our predecessors sacrificed so much – paraded in this display of misplaced high-minded contempt.
And how they must be laughing!
