Tower block fires can be fought from the air

Thursday, 29th June 2017

• YOUR Comment, (The alarm has been raised: we must act on fire safety, June 22) hits the nail on the head but I would go further; we must rethink the fighting of fires in tower blocks.

The Grenfell fire was appalling but it need not have been so bad. Duly prepared and on standby, the RAF could have put out the fire in no time.

Their helicopters with the cutely named “bambi buckets” may well have done the trick in a good few loads. Alternatively, their C-130 Hercules with the MAFFS2 kit, or similar, could have done the job, albeit rather more messily.

My theory is the helicopter solution may end up a bit like the dambusters raid. The vehicle will need to fly at a predetermined speed and height, and deliver the load at a predetermined distance from the target. Then the water will pour down the side of the building.

Of course, the RAF should not be expected to pay the costs of providing a solution. But they have most of the gear and the best pilots in the world. We should use them.
