Transfer window closes with a whimper for Arsenal

MLS defender is only signing as Aubameyang exit leaves Lacazette and Nketiah in attack

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined Barcelona on a free transfer

IT can be hard to pull the positives from a transfer window that saw Arsenal only sign Auston Trusty from Colorado Rapids, and then instantly announce that the defender will remain with the MLS side on loan.

Especially when the club reveal that they will then loan the 23-year-old out in Europe for the 2022/23 season to “further progress his development”.

Little comfort at a time when some Arsenal fans are still coming to terms with the news that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been allowed to join Barcelona on a free transfer.

“I have always been 100 per cent focused and committed on doing everything I can for this club, which is why leaving without a real goodbye hurts – but that is football,” said Aubameyang after making the switch to the Catalan giants on a permanent deal.

Aubameyang’s departure leaves Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah to fire the Gunners to glory – two players who are out of contract in the summer and set to leave.

It’s a gamble that may cost Arsenal any faint hope they had of finishing in the Premier League top four this season. But there is still hope.

With Aubameyang’s wages off the books the Gunners will save in the region of £25million – funds that supporters can now expect to be used to bulk up what the club spends in the summer.

Arsenal are on course to match – if not top – the £150m they spent last summer, allowing Mikel Arteta to continue his rebuilding job. Arteta’s previous signings have certainly improved the squad – and now could be the perfect time for the Arsenal board to stand by their man.
