We need to challenge racism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism
Thursday, 22nd August 2024
• THE weeks since the racist attacks on refugees and those seeking asylum have shown that many thousands of people are prepared to stand up to racism and bigotry.
Where nazis and the far right threatened to come out on to our streets again they were met with big protests, showing that we will not let them divide us.
Locally we were pleased to see trade unionists and campaigners come together to speak out against racism, and since the letter published two weeks ago, we have been contacted by even more individuals and trade unions asking what else we can do to stop the growth of the far right and nazis.
But a fortnight of good solidarity protests will not by itself see off the far right, they have Nigel Farage in parliament, and Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) has said that he will be organising another march in central London. So we need to be ready to mobilise against that, and also to challenge the ideas, actions and language of racism, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism.
Therefore Camden UNISON has agreed to host a planning meeting where we can all discuss and decide our next steps. The meeting is at 6pm on Thursday August 29, in the Conference Suite, Crowndale Centre, 218 Eversholt Street NW1 1BD.
