A MAYFAIR private members’ club was facing criticism from police yesterday, Thursday, after a fight and a stabbing at a festival after-party it was hosting.

The Concept Club in Duke Street hosted the guest-list event following the Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park on Saturday night.

City councillors imposed a month suspension of the licence following a meeting at Westminster City Hall. Documents submitted to yesterday’s licensing committee said a fight involving 15 people ended with a man being stabbed in the stomach.

Police said they had “grave concerns” and suggested there may have been “multiple breaches of the licence conditions” on the night, according to a council officer’s report.

The club’s lawyers contested some of the allegations by police while accepting the need for a thorough investigation and did not object to the review.

One of the club’s security team was also bottled while trying to break up the fight and the councillors heard the club was as much “a victim as anyone else”. The club’s lawyer said: “The reason we don’t object is that the licence holder takes the similar view to the police that this is a serious matter that needs to be investigated by the police, and that cannot be done in a few days. What my client intends to do in the next three to four weeks is to look into everything that has gone wrong, address the police where they have got the wrong end of the stick, bringing in a new security team and new management to ensure that this type of incident doesn’t happen again.

“My client runs a premises so they can enjoy themselves. We were the victims of this incident as much as others. One of our security staff was slashed, with a broken bottle.

“We have ID scans, and searches. There is no suggestion a bladed instrument got in. It is wrong to say, as the police do, that this premises can only operate as a restaurant. What is correct is that between three and 6am it must only operate as a restaurant. This incident took place at 2.20am.”

The police had brought an application to suspend the club’s licence, stop the sale of alcohol there, and “remove the designated premises supervisor”.

A Metropolitan Police Service report submitted to the council said: “One man was found with a stab wound to the abdomen, one male was found unconscious with a head injury, and the third male, a security guard, with laceration injuries to the face (above the eye, below the eye, on his cheek) after he was hit over the head with a bottle while trying to break up the fight.”

The meeting was told a supervisor at the club had already been suspended by the club during the investigation.

The event had been hosted by Naitram Live, which had organised successful and peaceful events at the club in the past, the hearing was told.

Licensing councillor Angela Piddock said: “The licensing authority has received a valid application for an expedited review submitted by the police. Having carefully considered the evidence and submissions, the committee has concluded it is necessary and proportionate to take the following interim step to suspend the licence with immediate effect.”

A review of the suspension will take place in 28 days.
