THE big winner at this year’s Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards was Oedipus, created by Robert Icke after Sophocles, which ran at Wyndham’s Theatre. It received awards for best actor, best actress and best director.

Selected to hand out the Best Actor Award to Mark Strong was the New Journal’s very own theatre editor, Lucy Popescu. This was an honour for Lucy and the CNJ as those chosen to present the awards are usually drawn from the major national press.

These are the only awards to be entirely voted for by the professional theatre critics who are members of the Critics’ Circle.

Other winners for Oedipus were Lesley Manville, named Best Actress, and Robert Icke who was awarded Best Director.
