IT doesn’t come much better than a dominant derby day win in your rivals’ backyard.
That’s just what Arsenal produced on Saturday when they continued their resurgence under interim boss Renee Slegers by thumping Spurs in front of more than 28,850 fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Alessia Russo ignited the rout after just 63 seconds with a first-time finish – the Gunners’ second-fastest goal in Women’s Super League history. Frida Maanum soon doubled Arsenal’s advantage, before substitute Stina Blackstenius wrapped up an impressive 3-0 victory just after the hour-mark.
The rejuvenated goal-getting Gunners have now won five and drawn one in all competitions since Slegers took charge of the team following Jonas Eidevall’s resignation last month. The Dutchwoman was quick to share the praise around after a controlled, composed and clinical performance.
“I think we look like a team both on and off the pitch,” said Slegers. “There’s positivity around us – staff, players and I think everyone is creating this, so we’re creating this together, with the fans as well. I’m very happy we got to this point and now the challenge is to stay here.”
The big games keep on coming with Arsenal hosting Juventus tonight (Thursday) in the Champions League at the Emirates Stadium.
