WHO said summer was over? They’re not giving up in Camden where York Rise street party is keeping up the holiday vibes on Sunday (Sept 11) with a massive line-up including The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment presents The Magic Flute, The Bob Marley Revival, Ray Gelato and His Giants, The Estimators, Whiskey Mick and friends, Talkin’/Jazz Lounge ft jazz on vinyl, talks, special guest, cinema, art, side shows, Dig It Sound System spinning the tunes and so much more. Bring donations for Castlehaven food bank and help build up stock in time for those who need it over the winter.
• Lafayette has the hook-ups, keep an eye on listings for short notice announcements. Not long ago H.E.R. stopped off while in town for APE and this week Beck played a special solo acoustic set, announced only a few days before. You can still catch twin viral mashup Tik Tok DJ sensations Altego at Lafayette on Sept 16.
• Good to see Camden’s Music Walk of Fame steadily developing, with rightly deserved recognition for David Bowie, who played Camden Roundhouse with his band the Hype way back in 1970. The stone will be laid opposite Camden Town Tube on Sept 15.
• Highlights of Jazz Café’s packed programme include: NY-based hip-hop DJ/producer GE-OLOGY, who has worked with Mos Def, Talib Kweli and De La Soul, takes over the late night slot on Sept 16; Mica Millar launches debut album Heaven Knows on Sept 17; reseting the gender balance Global Soul Showcase features an all-female line-up incl Etta Bond, Latanya Alberto, Tasha Angela, Tilly Valentine, DRCY and Amber-Simone (Sept 18); Kyoto Jazz Massive perform in London for the first time in 15 years (Sept 20) and Karol Conká brings her Brazilian pop-infused hip-hop to the JC on Sept 21.
• Remember Florida indie group Black Kids’ Cure-esque 2008 track I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You? It was everywhere and then it wasn’t. They play their debut album of the same year Partie Traumatic at 100 Club on Sept 15.
• Watch a bunch of lawyers battle it out with the power of rock for charity at Law Rocks at 100 Club on Sept 14. Follow it up with a trip to Camden Rocks presents … at The Fiddler’s Elbow on Sept 23 for where Red Town (also made up of some very talented lawyers) launch new single Blind to the Fire and join Susan, Death By Bunny, Next To Nada and Paradise Row for a night of high-energy rock, plus, in Red Town’s case some funk and soul with a hint of jazz.
• Help raise money while immersing yourself in some gritty rock and proto punk at The Dublin Castle’s Rock n Roll Rescue fundraiser party ft London SS + Dead Hombres + Dragstrip Guns + Wild Talk.
• Warm up your lungs for Massaoke’s Rockstar weekend at Electric Ballroom on Sept 9 – be ready to sing along to massive hairbrush anthems with live accompaniment from a suitably spandex-clad band – an unmissable party. Then revel in grunge nostalgia as Seattle’s Mudhoney play Electric Ballroom on Sept 10 with support from Large Plants, the heads and John E Vistic.
• Roy Ayers brings his Ubiquity band to London for two nights for his Everybody Loves The Sunshine 45th anniversary tour at 100 Club on Sept 19 and 229 on Sept 20.
• Steet Punk band Cock Sparrer are taking two days to fully celebrate their 50th birthday bash at the Roundhouse on Sept 9-10. Then, on Sept 17 Gok Wan brings his in-demand party night Isolation Nation, which started out as a series of livestreams to lift the spirits during lockdown, to the venue.
• Grammy nominee American trumpeter Chief Xian a Tunde Adjuah aka Christian Scott – a chieftain of the Xodokan Nation of the maroon tribes of New Orleans – continues to lead a new era of jazz at Koko on Sept 13.
• Crawdaddy! returns to The Fiddlers Elbow on Sept 16 with guest DJ Jack Gadsen joining Gary, Lucienne and Danny to play the finest northern soul, mod, Motown, vintage R&B, Two Tone, ska and rocksteady, all on vinyl.
• Don’t be alarmed if you hear a stirring sound emanating from Green Note on Sept 17 – it’s only the Drums of the World drumming workshop – sounds therapeutic. Run by Adam Texeira from drum teaching collective Elephant Drums, the session is open to beginners and more experienced drummers.
• The festivals continue into September – this time with an intellectual / philosophical twist with How The Light Gets In at Hampstead Heath (Sept 17-18). There’s a huge line-up of speakers plus music from Gwenno, Django Django (DJ set), Rosie Alena, Girls Of The Internet and plenty more plus comedy, dining, philosophy salons, cinema and more.
