DJ is keeping the dance music dream alive

Millz at the old Blackmarket Records shop
IF you scroll through social media, there are few people who look like they’re enjoying life more than DJ Millz.
Every post feels like the best kind of bucket-hat, drum-and-bass party. I’m a bit old to be jealous, but I am.
A few weeks ago, the beats paused as she posted a picture from D’Arblay Street.
It was here that her father, Nicky Blackmarket, ran what was perhaps one of the most influential and iconic record shops London has ever seen.
At first, it could feel intimidating. But step inside and you’d find that everyone simply loved their dance music.
Nobody looked down on you for not knowing the exact title of a white-label jungle import or a garage classic.
Whether you were buying records to play in bars or clubs, or just in your bedroom, it was all part of a vital 1990s scene, when this corner of Soho was packed with vinyl emporiums. Most of them have since disappeared. Blackmarket itself is now a clothes shop, closed in 2015.
But check out Millz on Instagram – she’s keeping the dance music dream alive.
