Neighbouring shop’s application for a late licence is thrown out

A VICAR and chaplain of the University of the Arts can sleep a little easier after a neighbouring shop’s application for a late licence was thrown out this week.

Church of England minister Rev William Whitcombe had written a strongly worded letter about a licensing application from The Holborn Food Hub.

He argued that if the takeaway was granted a licence to serve food until 3am, it would mean sleepless nights – and affect how well he could see to his congregation’s needs.

His objection said: “This would significantly impact not only on my work as a chaplain and mental health care giver but also the overall quality of life.

“The Holborn Hub is located directly beneath my living room and bedroom. I am deeply concerned about the potential negative impact this late night licence would have.”

He added selling hot food in the early hours would encourage “intoxicated individuals” to the area who were more likely to commit crime.

The owners of the Hub argued the venue had new CCTV installed, adequate lighting and would complete a risk assessment to help tackle crime.

But a council committee dismissed the application.
