Lord Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber

SO here he comes again.

Barely a week seems to go by without Sir Starlight himself, Lord Lloyd-Webber, offering a dull opinion.

Last week you could find him whistling in the direction of the culture war warriors by insisting he had to “play it safe” with his future musicals.

I almost expected him to say he couldn’t write Cats now in case a tortoiseshell took offence.

As it was, he insisted that it would be impossible for him to come up with Evita in this modern world.

So what happens now? He explained: “There was a subject that I really wanted to consider doing but everybody was saying to me “you can’t do this because you’re not from that country”, and you’re sort of thinking, well hang on a moment that means that most of the shows that have been written, most of the operas that have been written, wouldn’t be allowed today because they weren’t written by the nationality of the composer who the subjects are about.”

In another hot take, he said he feared for the future of Broadway because the costs of productions were becoming prohibitive.

It’s terrible when you can’t find the funds to do what you want – so imagine what it must be like when you don’t have the money to do what you actually need for life’s basics.

The streets don’t forget that Lord Lloyd-Webber, a Conservative peer, speedily flew back from New York in 2015 so that he could vote in the House of Lords in favour of government plans to reduce tax credits relied on by the poorest people.

His spokesman said afterwards: “He voted last night because he feels that it is important for democracy that the House of Lords should not override decisions made by the elected House of Commons.”
