CALLS have been made for a Gareth Southgate statue to be erected at a prominent location in the capital if England win the Euros on Sunday.
Fans are demanding the England manager is given a worthy memorial after guiding the Three Lions to Wembley clash against Italy.
Murad Qureshi, a former London Assembly member, said: “If we win the Euro cup on Sunday, we definitely want a statue of Gareth Southgate,” adding that it would be a perfect replacement for the Sir Robert Clive bronze in Whitehall.
“Get this man a statue outside of parliament,” said happy fan Ed Bass, as wild celebrations took over Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night.
Statue petitions have been set up online but they are unlikely to have immediate success as the city council has a strict policy on approving new monuments of living people.
Fans on social media have suggested that the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, a space normally reserved for new modern art works, could be used as a temporary location for free-standing sculpture of the former Aston Villa centre-back.
The Black Lives Matter protests last year sparked a debate about whether statues celebrating former imperialists, including Robert Clive in Whitehall, should be replaced.
Meanwhile, the Met Police warned bad behaviour will not be tolerated after the final whistle, with concerns defeat could trigger trouble in the West End.
Fans have been urged to not go to Trafalgar Square if they do have a ticket to get into the Fan Zone big screens.
Despite the warnings, hundreds of fans turned up before the semi-final clash with Denmark on Wednesday.
After the match, celebrations spilled over into the West End.
Police said they made 20 arrests and riot police were on hand as traffic was brought to a standstill at Piccadilly Circus when fans blocked streets and climbed on telephone boxes.
Arrests were made for a number of alleged offences including common assault, public order and assault on police.
