Remember Merchant Navy Day and memorials to those lost at sea
Thursday, 9th May 2024
• THANK you for publishing the story of the sinking of the Blue Star Liner SS Arandora Star in July 1940 and the recent burial of Francesco D’Inverno.
Some readers may not know of the Merchant Navy Memorials in Trinity Square Gardens, directly outside the exit to Tower Hill Underground station.
Memorials to merchant seafarers lost in both world wars, and in the Falklands War, record the names of more than 36,000 with no known grave but the sea, listed alphabetically by the name of the ship.
The memorials are managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It’s a moving place.
Merchant Navy Day is marked on September 3 every year and an annual service is held at the memorials on the Sunday nearest to that day.
This year the annual service is likely to be on Sunday September 1 and all are welcome to attend. Arrive before noon as the band starts to play; the parade starts at about 12.30pm.
