SILVERWARE was secondary when fleet-footed footballers came together to enjoy a kickabout for charity at the artificial football pitches in Market Road recently.

Eight teams featuring top players from across Camden, Islington and Westminster took part in the seven-a-side tournament to help raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Stokey United were ‘B’ Cup runners-up after losing 3-1 to Real LabTech

Organised by the owners of Camden Market, LabTech, and community group and elite football academy Pro Touch SA, the competition proved a massive success.

So much so that the partnership is already exploring plans to host further events in aid of the children’s hospital in Bloomsbury this summer, with more football and even cricket on the cards.

Former Labour councillor Abdul Hai, who is now director of community relations and public affairs for LabTech, said: “GOSH is a fantastic charity, and we wanted to play our small part in supporting them.

“We haven’t finalised how much we raised yet, but it was a fantastic day with men and women joining forces because they really care about the charity and wanted to help make a difference.

Bloomsbury-based Worth Global Style Network reached the semi-finals

“I want to thank everyone who took part. And a massive thank-you to the team from Pro Touch – without their help and support we could never have put the tournament together.

“At the moment we’re discussing future plans to raise more money for GOSH – maybe another football tournament or perhaps even a cricket competition.”

Sponsors LabTech entered three teams: LabTech All-Stars, LabTech Legends, and Real LabTech

Pro Touch more than just helped to organise the GOSH fundraiser – they also went and won it after beating Castlehaven in the final.

Pro Touch co-founder Zahid Hossain said: “Initially, we were hoping to get 16 teams to take part, but considering how quickly we put the event together we were happy with eight, especially as it was held midweek in the heart of winter.

Castlehaven were narrowly beaten 2-0 in the ‘A’ Cup final by Pro Touch

“Some of the players signed up for the social element; others were there to win it – but everyone’s main goal was to help raise as much money as possible for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“We’re really looking forward to teaming up with LabTech again this year to host further events. I think if we held another football tournament, though, it would have to be in the summer and at the weekend so that we could get even more teams involved.”
