• ON Monday I had to be in Covent Garden at 5am. Outside St Paul’s Church were sleeping at least eight homeless people. It certainly had been a very cold night.

There was an official in the area and I asked him why these people couldn’t sleep in the church hall. He looked at me and said: “You are joking this is the Church of England.”

These buildings should be used for another purpose.
