• I AGREE with economist James Meadway that a Labour government should introduce a wealth tax, (How will Keir pay the bills? November 23).

A good starting point would be to introduce some higher bands of council tax beyond band H for those living in the most valuable homes. Our property taxes are far lower than those in most advanced countries.

My son in the United States pays three times as much as I do on a house which is worth less. Such a move would have the additional benefit of encouraging “empty nesters” to downsize, thus freeing up larger homes for families.
