THE daughter of a maintenance worker killed while working on a pop-up toilet in the West End says the family have been “left in the dark” two years after the tragedy.

Kevin Holding, who was working on behalf of Westminster City Council, was crushed to death in Cambridge Circus in January 2023.

It took two hours for rescue teams to get to the 60-year-old.

A post mortem gave the cause of death as compression asphyxia, when the body is crushed making breathing impossible.

His daughter Karlie Holding this week said the family still had many unanswered questions and feared that the investigation had been kicked into the long grass.

She told the BBC: “We feel disrespected.

“The family is very broken. We are still struggling and we want answers. We still question every day how long was he stuck down there?

“Was it quick for him? We know nothing.

“We live every day, thinking ‘what did actually happen to him?’

“We know there needs to be an investigation. Components of the toilet need to be looked at. We get that. But we are struggling with the lack of communication. Just tell us what is going on. Even if you said ‘we need X amount of time’, keep us in the loop. Keep us informed.

“All the time they are leaving us in the dark. That’s when we are like they are not doing nothing and the file is gathering dust.”

Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis from the Metropolitan Police Service, which is still investigating the death, has apologised to the Holding family, from Sevenoaks, Kent.

He added: “This is a complex case and it has taken time to receive the interim expert report from the Health and Safety Executive.

“We have carefully considered the [HSE report’s] content and are awaiting some final advice before we decide on the next steps.

“We acknowledge this investigation has been ongoing for a long time.”

This time last year, the police service admitted it had “not provided the family with the support they would expect during the past year”.

A Health and Safety Executive spokesperson said in a statement: “We are assisting the Metropolitan police investigation into this incident.”
