A FUN and friendly matchday was held at St Aloysius Playing Fields in Highgate on Saturday, as Islington’s Primary District Under-11s football team took on their Islington & Camden District Under-12s counterparts.

This season’s district programme was delayed and then halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving the newly selected teams short on training and competitive fixtures. This welcome outing swung in the secondary team’s favour, with Alfie Parker hitting a hat-trick, Aaron Connor bagging a brace, and Tristan Hamann-Chanes, Shevin Tchouya and Joe Rodger all finding the back of the net.

But it wasn’t a day for keeping score or crowning winners – it was all about getting the youngsters back playing the sport that they love.

“It was a good runout for the players,” said Primary team manager Michael MacNeill.

“With no training sessions under our belt yet, we were pleased with some of the things we saw today. I think the Under-12s look a good team, and I hope both squads get more games in 2021.”
