POLICE investigating the mysterious death of a legendary drag queen two years ago have released footage of three people they are looking for.

Steven Grygelko was found dead in a flat in Soho Square on April 3 2023. The 55-year old was known by the stage name Heklina, and was discovered by a friend Joshua Grannell, known as Peaches Christ.

The pair, from the US, were days away from co-starring in a musical parody Mommie Queerest at the Soho Theatre and had been staying in a rented flat together.

Mr Grannell has said he had gone to stay in a hotel when Heklina had arranged a sexual encounter, and when he returned to the flat he found his co-creator dead.

“I always knew Heklina was not alone,” he told San Francisco-based media outlet SFGATE on Sunday. “I knew that from the minute I found her. I just don’t think detectives took it seriously or cared.”

In May 2023 Mr Grannell had helped put on a memorial for her at the Castro Theatre in California, where Mr Grygelko was originally from.

That drew thousands of people and shut down the street.

Born in Minneapolis, Mr Grygelko’s mother was from Iceland and named him after a Nordic volcano, Hekla.

He founded the iconic San Francisco LGBT/drag nightclub and live show Trannyshack in 1996.

The show Mommie Queerest is a drag parody of the American cult film Mommie Dearest starring Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford.

The Metropolitan Police Service said the death is being treated as unexpected and remains under investigation, but a date for an inquest is yet to be fixed.

Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis, from the central west command unit, said: “Our thoughts are with Steven’s family and friends who still have a lot of unanswered questions about what happened to him.

“We know that the three men in the CCTV images were at the flat in the early hours of 3 April 2023. I am asking them to contact the police. We need to establish what happened, and how Steven was when they left.

“If you recognise any of the men, I would encourage you to let us know who they are.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 1824/03Apr23.
